Hi there.
We'll be in Sharjah for our first visit on late November (on Tuesday). We'll be staying at Holiday Inn.
We would like to have a cultural visit of the city and a few souq.We don't speak English very well
and we are a little worried of what exactly ask to the taxi driver. Do you think we can go to one
address (which one? and walk around alone ?).
On wednesday we'll go to Dubai Marina by taxi. Which is the best time to leave (less traffic) and
how much will cost approx.
Best regards and many thanks.
Ciao Gardenia

Ask at Holiday Inn to book a tour for you when you get here, the taxi drivers speak very little or no english. You can walk around on your own it is safe but Sharjah is very conservative, if you are female please cover your arms and legs.

Dubai is not so conservative.

Taxi to Marina will cost about dhs.80 - 100, go after 9am. or get a taxi to Rashidiya Metro Station and then Metro to Marina.

Get on the internet figure out where you want to go then write it down because many taxi drivers read English [not all]or tell the bell guy at the Hotel and he can tell the taxi drives,The drivers in Sharjah know Sharjahin most cases so you should have no problems. We travel all around the world and get around very easy when we are in non-English speaking countries so don't worry..

I live in Sharjah so here is a list.

1.The Arabian wildlife center down from the Sharjah airport.,2.The new Sharjah aquarium, 3. Sharjah is the Museum Emirate so look on the net to get info because there are many and from what I hear they are nice.
4I like the fish market so check that out,4.The blue Souk is also nice,5, Al Qasba is a nice place in the evening to walk around and plenty of places to eat.Rolla Square is full of shops selling tradtional clothes and fun place to have a look..If you want a nice beach head to Al Mamzar[Right outside Sharjah, which cost 5 to get in but it very nice and has a lot of beaches.

Any Taxi driver in Sharjah should knows these places so you should be just fine.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your help.
other question please: few days in Dubai Marina, we'll not be staying in hotel along the beach.
Can you suggest a beach near JBR?
What to not miss in the area?
in the evening is it a safe place to walk around?
Ciao. Gardenia

The beach IS at JBR. I personally prefer the beach at Umm Sequim, but JBR beach is nice as well and you can get something to eat and drink at one of the many cafes at JBR Walk.
Where are you staying ? and what do you like to do??
The Marina is just Tower blocks, shops and restaurants, no real must sees.
Marina Mall - nice Mall.
Marina Walk - shops, cafes and look at the nice boats,
JBR The Walk - more shops, cafes and restaurants.
Captain Jack boat trip every hour from Marina Walk goes out to the Palm and along the coast in front of JBR.
It is very safe to walk around at night.
Baristi Bar at The Meridien is a nice place to have a drink and watch the sun go down,
Grosvenor House for Friday Brunch.
Souk Madinet is very pretty.
Atlantis on The Palm for the Water Park or Wild Wadi Water Park at Jumeirah Beach Hotel.
Or spurge out and go to Burj Al Arab for afternoon tea in the skybar.
The Aquarium at Atlantis is free.

the Al Arsa souq is in the Heritage Area of Sharjah - sometimes known as the Old Souq. Just ask at your hotel, they will be able to tell you how to get tehre.

This is area is nice to wander around too - although there is a lot of reconstruction going on there at the moment, as the whole heritage and arts area is being redeveloped. This is where many of the museums are - but lots of them are now closed for the redevelopment. The Bait Naboodah is a very nice one though, it's the former home of a rich merchant and very nicely done. There is usually a guide there who will like to show you around and give you tea - they are always very interesting!

The arts area is also nice to wander around - there is a big contemporary art museum, where there are some interesting exhibitions, it also houses the Sheikh's Orientalist collection of paintings and prints, if you're interested in that kind of thing. Close to the Art Museum there is a small souq there known as the Iranian Souq that as a visitor is interesting to walk through - it's not really big - there are traditional clothes, spices, herbs, household stuff, shoes, this kind of thing.
