Hi,

I'm thinking of applying for a teaching post in Abu Dhabi next year. All the adverts I've seen say that accommodation is included but does anyone have any idea what the standard of accommodation they provide for teachers is?

Thanks

The standard of the housing, and whether it is shared or not, completely depends on the employer. I suggest that you visit www.eslcafe.com which is a discussion board for teachers that has a section on the Middle East broken down by country.

Housing is pretty expensive over here. Although I am not a teacher it's pretty normal for expat professionals set up with housing through there company to share accomidation. If you manage to get your own flat you may consider yourself lucky. As mentioned above you'll probably have better luck with info on the website provided.

Thanks guys, I don't mind sharing in the slightest - I think it will be a good way to meet people in a new country but I will check out that website, cheers

I have just worked here a year and am leaving now. Accommodation is always provided by the employer. Remember Abu Dhabi is the Emirate with the oil/money. I worked for the Govt' so that is supposed to be the top payer for teachers here. Accommodation varies. For example my place is as big and nice as a conventional US apartment, but used to be a seedy hotel apt for prostitutes. We didn't now that until we got here! The other teachers got fine places and bigger the farther you are from city center. YOu get to decide. But some employers do the foot work for you and you don't get a choice.

As for the job, well let me just say there were a lot of people who left mid year and a lot who resigned before year two of contract began. Let me just say, once they get you over here, you are lucky to have someone in HR talk to you or even grumble your way. Other school, where friends worked are better, usually private schools and accomm is better but pay is less.

Good luck! I am only too happy to be leaving...The experience was fine, just not all that rewarding, organized, appreciative or impressive. You are payed a lot for a reason.
