Travelling to Dubai with 4 month-valid passport

Country forums / Middle East / United Arab Emirates

I am travelling to Dubai to visit a friend for a week. As a holder of a Dutch passport, I know that a tourist visa is not required. However, my passpport will be only 4 month valid upon my departure from Dubai. Does it necessary that I get a new passport? Does anyone have any experience travelling with less than 6 month-valid passport? Will I get problems when boarding with airliner or with immigration ? Thanks in advance for any advice.

If your passport has less than 6 months validity when you try to check in for your flight to Dubai, then you wont be allowed to check in. It will be the airline that blocks you, not UAE immigration.

I've had direct experience of this, twice.
The fiorst time was by accident, through handing over the wrong (nearly expired) passport at check in, but I was allowed to travel once I produced the other passport. The second time was done deliberately as a test, with exactly the same result, from a different airport and with a different airline.

caterpillar is right! Renew your passport ASAP.Dont travel with less than 6 months on it, you won;t be able to board the plane

You can get authoritative information on UAE visa requirements on the Emirates web site. This information is provided by IATA and is the same information that airlines use.

For a Dutch national, it clearly states that for visits not exceeding 3 months, your passport only needs to be valid for at least 3 months on the date of entry into the UAE. As you said that you are only visiting for one week and your passport will have 4 months validity on the date of departure, you don't need to get a new passport.

Thanks for all the answers. I think I will take the risk and travel with my 4-month valid passport. I will report my experience to you once return.

It is not advisable to travel in Dubai with 6 month less validity. As per UAE immigration rules you will not be allowed to check in. Airport authority will not allow you to check in on the airport. So it would be advisable to contact concern authority.

wish you happy journey in Dubai.....

I've been to back and back home. There was no trouble with the airliner nor the immigration.

I have now the same problem, Im german and passport is only valid for 4 months. Airlines, IATA, Traveller Information MAnual Abu Dhabi say 3 months are enough when travelling up to 3 months, while embassy, airport etc. say 6 months. What should I trust?

It's the airline who are responsible for checking your travel document before they board you. So you should rely on what the airline says. Airlines get fined if they transport passengers to countries with ineligible passports or visas. Airlines use information provided by IATA, which is reliable:

http://www.emirates.com/uk/english/plan_book/essential_information/visa_passport_information/find_visa_requirements/find_visa_requirements.aspx

Document Validity:
Passport or passport replacing documents of visitors must be valid for:
- at least 3 months from the date of entry, for visits of up to 3 months; or
- at least 6 months from the date of entry, for visits exceeding 3 months.

You should also note that the original poster had no problem visiting the UAE with his passport being valid for only 4 months.

Yes, I know about this. But you would agree that its more than worrying that german embassy in Dubai, as well as UAE embassy in Germany, immigration office in Dubai (DRND) and Federal Foreign Office tell me 6 months and never heard of these 3 months... its a kind of luck game

This is what happens in Dubai - you cannot get reliable information or a final answer and there is always confusion.

I still believe you will be fine with 4 months validity on your passport, but if you are worried about it, then simply renew your passport. I was going to suggest checking with your airline but you will probably just get put through to someone in a call centre who won't know the answer.
