Tel Aviv - traditional hammam

Country forums / Middle East / Israel

Hey guys!

I am going to Tel Aviv in a couple of days, and I am wondering whether anyone knows of any traditional hammams in the city?

I am not looking for a "spa", I'd like the oldfashioned, no frills, no plinkplonk music/candles kind of hammam. You know, the kind of hammam with decades old tiles, employees that look more like mechanics than massagetherapists, that take crap from no one, grunts instructions like a tired old boxing coach, and with total lack of regard to any wussy bodyconfidence issues you may have. Absolutely love it!!

I have been to hammams in Jordan and Turkey that were really amazing experiences, and I hope to find something similar in Tel Aviv.

Can anyone help me out??

Thank you in advance.

Veronica :-)

To the best of my knowledge there is no old skool hammam in Tel Aviv...

Ah, okay - thank you very much for your reply, though! Suppose I'll just head to the beach instead then :-)

The only Hammams I know of are in Al-Bireh (near Ramallah) and Nablus old city. Nothing like that in Tel Aviv, as it's not really an "old" city and doesn't really have Ottoman influence. I've always thought someone could make a killing setting one up in Jerusalem, but so far no dice. :(

Oh, there's also a nice hammam in Nazareth, at least there was a few years ago, not sure if it is still open.
