Suggestions Oman in April!

Country forums / Middle East / Oman

Hi guys, 2 independant girls travelling to Oman in April would love to get some tips or suggestions on a 10 day itinerary. We'll be trying to squeeze in as much in those 10 days as possible; camels, desert, diving, beach.....as much as possible! Would be great if anyone could point us in the best itinerary-direction.

Are you looking to just settle down somewhere or possibly move around?

Both Muscat and Salalah can offer what you are looking for. Muscat is near the Wahiba desert, Salalah has the Empty Quarter. There is diving in both cities (Muscat offers slightly more options), and Salalah has better beaches. The hotel options in Salalah are limited, but I have heard of some amazing deals recently.

Are you planning to hire a car or 4x4 and explore yourselves or use taxis or use tour operators? as it all depends.
The following link is a start to give you some ideas: http://www.goway.com/africa/oman/index.html also http://www.omanet.om/english/home.asp
The weather should still be pleasant enough and not very hot yet. I suggest you spend may be around 3 days in Muscat for sightseeing ie Muttrah Souk, diving in Oman Dive Center, some relaxing / swimming / snorkelling on Muscat beachs, Grand Mosque, there couple of Museums too. You can also go to Nakhal Fort, Nizwa area for Fort/Souk and old village Misfat Al Abreen, Al Hoota cave, Jabal Al Akhdar, Jabal Shams, etc. Sawadi beach for camel/horse riding and they can also organise diving trip to Damiyant island. For a dessert safari, you can go to wahiba sand.
There is also Sur for turtles and a Wadi Tiwi / Wadi Shaab just before Sur, which are worth the visit.
I dont thinkthat you have enough time to combine Salalah as well, which is about 1000km away from Muscat. You probably need another 3-4 days to cover it.

Hope that help you and if you need more or specific questions, you can contact me directly.

Good luck and enjoy.

Hi,
We're also looking at going to Oman from 15th April and keen to see a lot before chilling out diving for a few days. Have given up with the idea of going to Salalah and concentrating on the circle of Muscat, Sur, Nizwa, Wahiba. It seems that the most cost effective way could be an organised tour... I've seen a few tour through Responsible Travel but pretty expensive - still a good mix of camping, walking and exploring. Wild Frontiers have a great tour but that only goes in March...

Have you managed to find any decent tours? Whilst the roads are apparently good I don't want to spend my time driving in Oman - I do too much of that on a daily basis.

Sorry to hijack your question! I'd be grateful if you could share any further details you have found if you think they might be of use.
