rules of attire

Hi, everybody!
I’m in the process of considering what to pack, as I’ll be leaving for Iran shortly, and I wonder if anyone can tell me: how severe is the ban on men wearing shorts in Iran?
(sure it applies to mosques, but holy places aside, does it depends on whether you’re in a small or big city or the region you’re in?)

You would not want to wear shorts as a general rule in cities.

It may not be illegal, but the reaction from people is the same as if you were walking around in your jocks

No one can wear shorts in Iran in public. and outside tempreatures is 40C (100F) or more now in summer. But that is another crazy law we have in Iran. Bye.

I met a guy wearing long shorts, just below the knee. I also met a guy wearing those zip offs around the calf. To be honest no one said anything. But your chances of getting into a mosque and/or getting extra privileges will be shortened if you where them.

Go for super light combats. Better looking than those zip off around the calf things

wearing shorts in Islamic countries, even if the weather is hot and the govt. is unpopular;It is not a good idea. If it is hot wear something like Shalwar kameez. The Irani Baluchis wear it so do us Pakistanis and, afghans and Indian muslims .It is cool and loose.

actually keeping the sun off your skin makes you cooler so think about why people in HOT middle eatsern and other dry heat Asian regions wear long flowing attire.

It is not just a cultural thing , it is common sense,esp. when it goes over 40 Celcius in the shade.

I did see some goras wearing shorts at imam square/naqsh -i - jehan in Isfohon and I was amazed at how gauche westerners abroad
can be.

Quite a few of the students I knew in Mazandaran and Tehran would wear long (below the knee) shorts. No problem on the street. Obviously most of the guys on the beach (Caspian) wore shorts, and generally no shirt but that's something of an exception.

Shorts are considered to be children's clothing. Grown men don't wear shorts in public.
