| tallebudgera09:21 UTC20 Mar 2007 | I intend travelling overland from the UAE through Oman and Yemen then on to Djibouti. I would appreciate any info on travelling through Oman and Yemen on public transport and what the border crossing is like. Also, I would be interested in experiences relating to a sea crossings from Yemen to Djibouti.

I was in Yemen 2 years ago and did the sea crossing in a dhow.
Went to T'iaz and then service taxi to El Mocha (sorry can't remeber exact spelling without guide book). Then you just have to wait for a boat... it is a small town with 1 hotel- there is not much to do but people are pretty friendly... talk to them and you'll quickly find who you need to discuss. Had to wait a couple of days and then found a boat- cost 30 USD plus like 5 for bribes... for that you get a space on the deck... although the crew gave us the same as they ate (fish in a stew)... sounds obvious but take whatever food you need and LOADS of water- it is hot and can be pretty rough. The boat stops at night (no radar).. it took 2 days... was a great experience... the creaking of the timber boat was like stepping back 200 years...
Try and get a visa for Dj... we didn't (as not easy to get in UK) and had a lot of trouble when we got there- infact at one stage they were not going to let us off the boat!!! Much as I enjoyed it the thought of going back was horrifying!!! It was quite a hard trip... Anyways- they took out passports and we had to hang around DJ for 3 days while they decided whether to give us a visa- then train to Ethiopia...
It was great- there are not many places left in the World where you can take such a boat... an ancient trade route as well...
Hope you make it...
E-mail me on kj439_uk@yahoo.co.uk if you want any more details.
Happy trails
