Just got back from my two week trip. here are a few points to share:-

(i) from dam to amman and vice versa, they now have a good bus company called challenge tours and transport which does the trip for around US$7. Very comfortable and takes maximum 4 hours, two trips a day;

(ii) if you had to choose between the two countries, definitely go for syria, the people are so much friendlier and it is still relative to Jordan untouched by mass tourism;

(iii) jordan is a really small country and you can cover a lot by organising a taxi for a day;

(iv) if you go in March there is no need to make any reservations except for really popular hotels eg the Mariam Hotel in Madaba;

(v) you dont need a guide for Petra - most of the popular sites are easily accessible albeit with a lot of walking;

(vi) if you read lp and have expectations about hama you will be dissapointed, there is nothing much going on there;

happy travels

more lessons.........

(i) the train from alleppo to damascus is great value - For less than US$7 you get a sleeper and since its not that popular, you will probably have the cabin to yourself (sleeps two), but they will only let you book a day in advance

(ii) try to do krak de chevaliers (you need about two hours) on the way from palmyrah to hama so that you dont waste a day travelling without seeing anything- a car from palmyrah with driver should cost between US$25-30 - a bargain if there are 4 people
