Internet in Aleppo

Country forums / Middle East / Syria

I just want to encourage people to avoid the Concord internet cafe in Aleppo, mentioned in the LP. It is so overpriced and probably only gets away with its 100 SP an hour charges because it is the only internet cafe very close to most of the cheap hotels. If you walk just a bit further away into the new Christian quarter you can find three good internet cafes -- Area 51, Kool Net and Montana -- which charge just 50 SP an hour. Area 51 is open 24 hours and will do discounts for chunks of time. You can also access Facebook and other blocked sites directly from Area 51.

Concord is a rip off - but it is not the only option near the budget hotels. There is another internet cafe two blocks north of the station for buses to Turkey, near to the gas station. The internet cafe is downstairs, underneath a normal coffee shop. They also have billiards. It is also about 50SP an hour, discounted if you buy blocks of time.

Though I usually go to al-Aziziyeh as well.

To save everybody the wandering around al-Aziziyeh looking for these places:

1) walk past the big Catholic Church (Jesuite?) on Fares al-Khuri Street
2) turn right
3) ignore the sign saying "Area 51" or you'll end up in an Armenian centre
4) take the next left

The speeds are slow, but otherwise it's great.

As of February 2010, the "Friends Cafe Net", located in the area of the Citadel, offer rates from 40 SYP per hour and less (if you buy in bulk). From the entrance to the Citadel, walk straight (south) to a block with shawarma outlets. The cafe is located just behind the block in a small street called "Jnenyt al-Fariq(1)". There is no obvious external street sign until to get to the cafe itself. Ask around if you don't find. 18 recent machines and a good connectivity (although slower when the cafe is busy). They say it is opened 24/24 (didn't check!).
