Dress Code in Israel

Country forums / Middle East / Israel

Hello,
I would like to know if it is not so appropriate to wear shorts in Israel? and how about or shorts that can cover the knees? Maybe some of you can elaborate more the dress code for a girl, thanks for your help...

Except at religious sites and in strictly Orthodox Jewish and conservative Arab areas it is perfectly acceptable to wear shorts. With the exception of the places mentioned above, you can wear micro-shorts and spaghetti-strap tops if you like, and nobody will mind.

For religious sites etc., you should cover your knees (a skirt is better than trousers if you are going to Mea She'arim in Jerusalem) and also your arms to just above the elbows. Also you shouldn't wear anything low-cut or very tight. You don't need stockings, and you don't need to cover your hair. Trousers are OK for women at the Western Wall.

Shuffaluff is right but I would also add that for blond-haired women it might be best to tie back and cover your hair with some kind of hat or headscarf when in Arab areas. This is because blond hair is unusual in Arabs and is considered to be of great beauty - therefore can bring a LOT of unwanted attention and the risk of sexual harassment even if the rest of your body is totally covered! I am speaking from unfortunate experience!

Depending on where you plan on spending most of your time you may want to adjust your clothing. For both cultural and climate reasons you can wear pretty much anything you want in Tel Aviv, for example, but on the other hand if you're in Jerusalem you'd be better off to make sure your knees and upper arms are covered and you're not wearing anything too tight. You don't want to find yourself not able to enter a really interesting place just because you're showing too much skin...

Also, keep in mind that it's chilly enough in Jerusalem these days in the evening to need a sweater!
