Coach from Istanbul to Damascus??

Country forums / Middle East / Syria

Hi,

I am planning on a 3 month trip to Syria in May, I have free flights to Istanbul and was hoping to take the train from Istanbul to Aleppo. However after a bit of research I have discovered that the train is out of action until at least May ... so I figure that I should start planning for an alternative route just in case the train still isn't working. I have looked on the internet to see if you can get a coach direct from Istanbul to Damascus (or anywhere in Syria really) but can't really find any info. So if anyone has taken a coach from Istanbul or knows anything about it, it would be good to hear from you. How long does it take and how much does it cost??

Thanks,

Rich

I've done this trip by bus several times before, and it's quite easy. The buses departing from Istanbul are also quite comfortable as overnight buses go....
I'd recommend, tho, to take a bus from Istanbul to Antakya (there are at least 2 per day - I think the name of the main company that runs this route is Has), then from there, buy a separate ticket to Aleppo and/or Damascus via bus or taxi. Cost-wise there's no difference, but if you buy a ticket straight through, you might be stuck waiting around at the bus station in Antakya, as you'll prb have to transfer buses anyway and the timing doesn't necessarily line up.
