Applying by post for Syrian visa in UK

Hi all,

We're off to Damascus in late September, although we're flying there from Turkey so will be out of the UK by September 18th. Is there still time to apply by post? Also do you have to be employed to get a visa? I do some part-time work for my Dad's business so shall I put that on the form?

I'm a bit nervous about sending our passports in the post, are they reliable with posting them back? My worry is that they won't arrive on time!

Finally, we're actually going for our honeymoon although as my passport is in my maiden name I've applied using maiden name, so on paper it'll look like we're a co-habiting couple. Are the Syrians ok with this!?

You will need two envelopes, and send both the passports with the application forms, photos etc. by Recorded Delivery, and enclose the second pre stamped (Recorded Delivery) and pre addressed envelope for the Embassy to return your passports by Recorded Delivery. The postie will require someone to sign for them, when the envelope is returned to you. They really do not check up on employers, as to whether you are part time or full time, so just put down your employers name.
You will have a great time in Syria. You have plenty of time, but get it all done and dusted asap, the embassy will probably turn the applications around within approx 4 to 5 working days. Then it will be one less thing to worry about. Oh, and congrats, on your forthcoming marriage, I am sure your maiden name won't cause a problem.

Yes, play safe. When I applied for a visa in London (It was easy for me as I live in London) they wanted evidence of my employment.
I asked my co-worker to fax my details on headed paper.

No problems, no real checks made and I picked up my visa within three days

In support of the above, I was worried about all of your points, but we received our passports back together (we aren't married) no problems within a week of sending them. And we'd sent them too much money (we had no idea how much visas were for multiple entry for Australian passport holders), and they sent us back change! Though we sent letters confirming employment, my manager never received any follow up checking this.

But no worries on the timeframes - we had ours back a week after sending.
