I was wondering if anyone has experiences with renting a cheap room in Damascus or in Aleppo for a short time.
As I need it only around from the 18th July until 25 August or so, I would prefer not to use yallahouse or such because they take quite a generous commission (as I've heard). It was written somewhere that the best way to do it is just to go there and start looking - but how do you do that?
By the way, if anyone would be interested in sharing a very simple and cheap room/apartment…

Canadian passport. We visited Israel and Jordan back in 2008-2009. Now, I want to visit Lebanon and Syria and will wait till I can get a new passport, keep that for a year and then apply for visas to Lebanon/Syria.
My question is:
- Will they still create problems in giving me a visa or at the border if my new passport has no Israel stamp/visit evidence?
- Do they demand to see older passports…

I am planning to drive to Damascus from Germany in august and remain there for a year with the car as I will study at the university there. I was wondering if anyone knew about the cost of keeping a foreign car in Syria for about a year? I am aware that there is a weekly diesel fee which is very expensive but I will be driving a petrol car. Any information about the mandatory insurance, road tax, etc and any other taxes, fees, or paper work required, pertaining to my car would be very helpful.

I try to do my bit for Syria's Tourist industry. When I went to the Four Waterwheels retsaurant in Hama, besides trying to over charge me for the houmas I ordered. They then also tried to charge me, for a bottle of water and a box of Kleenex tissues, that I hadn't ordered or touched. This dishonest restaurant has subsequently been removed from my Hama top tips list. Who do they think they are?
