Hi,

A small group of us are planning to hire a 4wd to travel around Syria. Is it easy to navigate using standard road maps or (like I have been hearing) roads can seem to pop up all over the place making navigation difficult. Should we need a guide with us for certain areas or can we get by on our own with local road maps?

I'm contemplating staying in Aleppo initially for 2 days, Palmyra for one day Damascus 4 days including Bosra, up to Hama for 2 days, then Aleppo again for a further 2 days before returning to Turkey. Does this sound too much or would you change anything?

My second question relates to Palmyra. We don't really want to spent the night there, but neither do we want to drag our bags around with us and we don't know where we could leave them. Would the only alternative be to 1) spend the night at…

I've been trying to draw up a list of hotels to stay at in Syria and would like someone's opinion on my choices. Unfortunately I can't book in advance because I don't know the exact dates I'll be there, so I know I may not be able to stay where I'd like to the most. Here are my choices in order of preference:

Aleppo:
• Mansouriya
• Sheraton Aleppo
• Martini Dar Zamaria.
• Ramsis
• Beit Wakhil
• Dar Halabia

Palmyra:
• Palmyra Cham Palace (way out of my price range unless I can bargain)
•…

My planned schedule around Syria will involve a bus journey from Palmyra to Damascus on a Friday.
Do the main bus companies--Karnak, Qadmous etc - run normal timetables on Fridays? Cheers

Will I be able to find shops with DVD burners in Syria and Jordan, or will I have better luck with CD's?

Need to burn photo's from camera. Would rather take DVD's because I can carry fewer.

Thanks,
Lance

Hi.
I will fly in march to Ankara. Does anybody know if there is direct bus connection from Ankara bus station to Damascus, or Aleppo?

Regards
Robert

Visa

I am currently studying in Ireland, but am a citizen of the U.S. I want to travel to Syria this summer after I get done with school in Ireland, and I know one is to get the visa in his/her country of residence. What are my options here since I will not be back in the U.S. until after I get done traveling? I've read that Istanbul is a good place to receive Syria's visa. I am a person who needs a basic plan where showing up is going to be very stressful for me if it's a 50/50 chance of me…

Merhaba,

I am American and I phoned the Syrian embassy in Ankara today and confirmed a negative in terms of obtaining a visa outside the States. Nonetheless I will try my luck at the border BUT I was thinking of taking the train from Istanbul-Aleppo. I will probably have to wait at the border but I do not want to make immigration inspectors think I am trying to smuggle myself into the country.
Has anyone taken said train from Turkey to Syria and if so, should I try my luck traveling from the bus…

Hi, we are in the very first phase of planning a trip to the Syria, Jordan and Israel in late March early April, (and we are super excited!) and we have a few questions.

Our itinery goes something like this:
Fly into Damascus – see Crac des Chevaliers, Palmyra, Bosra maybe more.
Cross the border to Jordan, probably rent a car and drive around, of course seeing Petra, Wadi Rum, the dead sea etc.
From Amman we would cross the King Hussein’s bridge to Israel, and see Jerusalem and maybe more…

Hi everybody,

due to serious time constraints (and adverse flight timings), I have just two days in Syria :-(

Yet, while one day is obviously reserved for Damascus, I would like to see Aleppo and the Krak des Chevaliers on the other day. This would of course only be possible, if road conditions permit a rather high speed in getting around.

So, figuring I am at Aleppo at 0600 by plane from Damascus, have a short walk around the city and the Citadel, be finished by 1100 or so (yes, I am that…
