I was in Syria last winter, travelling alone and I am a woman.
I really suggest you after Aleppo to stop 1 night in Hama to see the big wheels in the river, have a walk on the park next to and visti the old city, including the gallery of the painters. The souq in Hama is not so great like in Aleppo, but maybe you can find something to get.
Then I advice you to spend two days in Palmyra. I planned just one day but then I changed my mind and I stayed one day more. Firsto day visit the ruins and the tombs, second day visit the real village and the desert and oasis next to.
I really recommend citadel hotel. Nice, clean, cheap and the owner, Razi and his brother are very good and polite people.
