Does anyone have any experience with Syria's embassy in the States? More specifically, how quickly they will send your passport back once you send it in for a visa. Thanks.

They are friendly, happy to answer questions by phone and prompt. Just make sure your paperwork is in order, and they should be able to turn it around in a day or two.
You will want to confirm this with them directly, but when I got my visa there a few years back they required only very general information even when the form was specific (e.g., for specific names and addresses of places you would be staying and contact names, you could just put "tourist hotels").
