My husband and I will (I hope!) be in northern Syria this August--we want to get there while the dig at Tell Mozan is active.

Can any of you recommend a hotel in Qamishli? We're looking for someplace mid-range. The LP guidebook's pretty negative on the whole area, but there's this great archeological site...

I've read that flights within Syria are inexpensive. Have any of you done this?

One more question, at least for this post: is it possible to cross into Turkey anywhere near there? There's a neolithic site not far away.

Apologies if any of this has already been discussed! I can't seem to search Thorn Tree; I get a message that the capacity has been disabled by the administrator.

Thanks,

Neala25

I haven't been to Qamilshle, but I have flown Aleppo-Damascus which was both cheap and decent.
If you want to cross you can do so in Qamishle to Nusaybin in Turkey.

As george5 says the Qamishle/Nusaybin border post is a 10 minute trip from the town of Qamishle. Don't know about accomodation in either town but half an hour north of Nusaybin is Mardin which is very nice and has hotels.

Hi,

don't worry : there a lot of hotels, of all categories, in Qamishly, on the main street going from the river to the public garden.

Could you give me some hotel names? Contact info would be great if you have it. We're not looking for luxury. Would prefer not to have to share the bathroom, though.

For that matter, does anyone out there no a travel agent for the country who: answers emails but won't try to book us into 5-star hotels the whole way?

Thanks yet again,

Jane

Hi, I personally don't know the names of the hotels in Qamishli, but when my husband tells about his trips with foreign travelers to that area, it seems he always finds hotels for them of acceptable level.
Qamishli is not in the most touristy region of Syria, but well worth visiting if you are interested in "tells" and other archaeological findings.

You can indeed cross over the border in the North East of the country, or travel to Aleppo and travel from there by bus, by rental car or by hiring a chauffeur.
