I am investigating a trip to Jordan in January 2011. I have been to Syria before but I have more time (5 days) to see Damascus and the countryside between Damascus and Amman.
I would love to catch the train but http://www.seat61.com/Jordan.htm advises that the Damascus-Amman train is suspended indefinitely. So the train option is to catch the train from Damascus to Deraa and switch to a Jordanian train from Deraa to Amman.
I appreciate that the bus from Damascus to Amman is faster but since I have some time I really don't want to catch the bus.
Has anybody done this trip: Damascus to Amman by train RECENTLY? I have searched but can’t find any up-to-date detail.

To the best of my knowledge this train no longer runs for passenger traffic, only occasionally for special trips. Notoriously the windows are usually broken, the consequence of small (and bigger) boys throwing stones at it
