Regards marcopoloo....#9 You are the one guy on the Syrian TT site whose judgement I trust. You are right about that old Mercedes Benz clunker, and the insurance, and the roadside rescue. Especially as you have already said 5000SYP was fair.
Hi Miez1,
The two hours waiting time were for the taxi driver while we visited, not for us to enter the site :)
Opening time is 9 to 6 in summer, 9 to 4 in winter
Cheers,
Jose

I'm curious to read that there is a high demand for cars and taxis - which you interpret as
being difficult to obtain on arrival. Absolutely not the case. Yes there is demand but there are also lots of cars. Any rent a car company will give you a car and driver on a daily rate.
Have you tried asking any of the reputable rent a car companies. Also you can ask more or less anyone in the street for a good car or taxi. when you see the car/taxi you can decide -
no or yes. The cars used by cairo and riyad arent that wonderful what I saw but they do the job.
In the end you get what you pay for and you must be steered by your budget for such things.
There is nearly always commission and middle men involved in tourism requirements.

Mesha, the driver I contacted is not through anyone. A friend gave me the number of the driver and after I contacted him he gave me a quote. I'm sure I could also get a driver once I am in Hama - but I prefer of course to go with someone who already comes with a recommendation - especially now that I know his price is not outrageous...

I couldn't agree more ! I wasn't saying dont go with him I was just pointing out that
there are thousands of unemployed drivers in Syria and Jordan and they are all looking
for work so the scenario you described isnt as it seems - only.
You are happy with the price - happy with the recommendation - go for it !

We hired a taxi through a local friend from Aleppo to Damascus, door to door. It wasn't easy but finally we succeded in doing so. Moreover, we also stopped over in Hama and then proceeded to Homs/CdeC. In all it cost us SYP7000. We also took the driver in with us in to the fort and offered him lunch at the restaurant near the fort. Thus, to your question, the price quoted to you is considered as good.
