Yep. It was easy. I crossed on the Jordan/Syria border. Arrived at about 2 p.m. Guy at the desk said, "we don't do visas at the border for U.S." I said I know that. He didn't even have to be asked and said, "so we will fax the application to Damascus. It will take a while. Maybe 5 hours." I told him thank you many times. He took my passport and my copy of my passport page. I went next door to a very nice hotel and sat in their business area and used wireless for 5 hours. Came back. Visa was already ready (I was shocked -- I think it might have been ready hours before then). Paid my $16 and moved on.
I heard about another American that showed up at 6 a.m. and had to wait until I got mine -- about 7 p.m. I think it might be best to show up around noon to 2 p.m. I think they make you wait until the end of the Damascus business day, no matter when you arrive.
