I will be going to Syria for the first time in May entering by bus or train. Could I leave getting Syrian pounds until I get to Aleppo or should I try to get some in Turkey?
When I leave Syria I would prefer to go to Gaziantep. Are there regular buses and is this an ok option.
Thanks
Chrissie

I suppose you can change money at the border post. In any case, take some dollars or euros with you. At Aleppo, you will find ATM's.

Aleppo - Gaziantep: collection of previous LP posters:
ANTEP - HALEB

I did the crossing back in 2005
I remember having taken a minibus(dolmus) from Gazientep Otogar station to the borders with a stop trough killis.
At the borders we crossed the nomensland walking. I takes around an hour and half to go through syrian custums (very unergonised)
Once in syria i took a kind of pickuptruck to the closest village, the guy wanted to charge me 600 liras but i ended up bargaining down to 100.
From this village (i forgot the name) you can take a dolmus to Aleppo for 25 liras
Cheers
I have found the following in this forum:

Direct Bus- Urfa to Aleppo
Despite the statement in latest LP that there is a dýrect bus between Urfa and Aleppo there isnt one.You must take minibus to Arakale, cross border by foot and then take bus from thereConfirmed at Urfa Otogar this morning. -------------------------'Personally, I believe a rocking hammock, a good cigar, and a tall gin-and-tonic is the way to save the planet.' Hi, You can easily get a taxi to Turkey in Aleppo (see above).

I can confirm that at least as of 1 yr ago, you could take a minibus from Urfa to AtKale and then get a regular bus to Aleppo. When I arrived at the border I found that the bus schedule had changed so you should be prepared to improvise. I hitched a ride with some customs agents going home to Damascus for the weekend

Hi!
Few weeks ago I made a trip from Gaziantep to Aleppo. According to Lonely Planet there are no direct buses. I took one of frequent minibuses from Gaziantep to Kilis (5 lira) and then in Kilis bus station I as approached by local taxi or tourist company who offered a car with driver to Allepo. Luckily there was one more passanger from minibus who was going to Aleppo. I paid 20 lira for the trip, so I suppose the price for car is 40 lira. But Lonely Planet says you can go by taxi from Gaziantep to Kilis and then hitch to Azaz in Syria where there are buses to Aleppo.
i have received so much help from this sight, i am so happy to help.
so i just returned from syria. took a commuter busto killis from antep (5 turkýsh lira), then a taxi to the border (10 TL), walked across the border, received a visa at the syrian border (56 US for Canadians, 16 US for americans), then took a taxi to hijaz (150 syrian lira), and finally a bus to aleppo (20 syrian lira). you could also take a taxi to aleppo from the border for about 600 syrian lira.. that is what i paid on my way back.. but beware, if you walk back to the turkish border after dark, you may not find a taxi to

take you back to killis to do the reverse trip. the LP book says it is 7 km, i think they meant 7 miles.
just a note, the border guys are great. on your way back, bring them some cool magazines (preferrably arabic, or lots of pictures if not arabic) and it will make your visit more pleasant, especially if had to wait there for an obscene amount of time for your visa.
cheers, and enjoy!

We got kind of taxi-service from Aleppo to GZT-airport for 20 US$ (whole car, 2 passengers).
Travel-Time was around 3 hrs including Border-crossing. But is has been a very calm sunday early morning.
The cars leave from what is shown as "International Bus Station" (No. 59) in the LP-guidebook. Look for the yellow/white painted cars (no taxi-sign) with stickers of a tour-company.
Several travel-agencys around the square claim to have bus-service to Gaziantep as well. But these agencies have been closen when we were there.

There are plenty of working ATMs here in Aleppo--I've used three in as many days (with Visa), and have had no problems. The border crossing near Tartous had a bank, and your crossing may also, since people getting visas on the spot need to pay a fee through the bank rather than to a border official.
