i am heading from india, through pakistan, iran, turkey to syria. can the syria and jordanian visas be obtained at the border? if not is ankara turkey, or tehran iran the best place to get this? is a letter of invitation required? how long does it take to get a visa for syria and / or jordan in turkey or iran?

Australians do get VOA to Turkey,Syria and Jordan.You can read dozens of post on the forum coverin this subject and confirm the statement if you wish.
No ivitations required.

Here Juan from Spaın, 31 dec 2009. Gettıng vısas on travel, goıng by bıke from Turkey to Syrıa, Jordan, Syrıa agaın to Turkey then Iran. Syrıan vısas can be obtaıned wıthout problems at any border!!!!!! Forget about embassıes or consulates!!!! At Kılıs border wıth Turkey, 3 hours. At Daara border, by bus, 15 mınutes!!!
