We are two Canadian travelers going through the Middle East and thought we'd share a story with everyone trying to visit Israel, Syria, Lebanon, etc.

We are heading north from Egypt into Turkey and thought we could visit Israel and continue north if we didn't get stamps from Israel. Well, we didn't get stamped, but when we got to the Syrian border, the officials noticed that the back of our passports were sticky due to removal of numerous security and baggage stickers from multiple countries. They insisted that we had been to Israel and removed the Israeli stickers. They did not have a sample sticker to measure and there was no writing and printing on the back of our passports, just remnants of past stickers. We left, cleaned the backs of our passports and tried entering Syria again later that night but were denied both times and we think we are now blacklisted. The Syrian officials did not do anything to our passport, but now we have two cancelled Jordanian exit stamps which we think may be a bit of a red flag.

We find this absurd. We thought we took all the precautions by not getting Israeli (or Jordanian border) stamps, but clearly this is not enough. We are now in Amman trying to figure out how to get to Turkey. We went to the Syrian embassy, but they wouldn't give us the time of day.

We really just wanted to post this as a warning, but were also wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and were able to do something to get into Syria after being denied entry.

Thanks for posting; I've actually wondered about this before as out of the 50 or so countries I've visited Israel is the only one that's put stickers on the back of my passport.

The Netherlands puts stickers on your passport when you are getting on the plane. You first talk to a security guy who puts the sticker on and initials it - and then when you go through the metal detector (which they do plane by plane) the make sure you have it with the initials of one of the people working there that day.

I'm really sorry OP - it's a shame that you got caught in this. Thanks for posting as well.

I don't recall Israeli stickers on my passport at land crossings, only at the airport.

I would say one thing - sticky or not - If they've spent a long time in Israel even if it doesn't show on the passport, that I imagine could also arise suspicion of a visit to "the Zionist Entity"...

I'm sorry to hear about that - maybe you should fly from Israel to Turkey, should be round 200 USD.

Lack of Jordanian stamps rather gives the game away that you've been to Israel as there's no other reason why those stamps would be missing

Basically if you travel overland from Egypt to Jordan via Israel there isn't any way you can avoid having proof that you've been to Israel.

You should have had a Jordanian entry stamp for either Aqaba or Amman

We did have a Jordanian entry stamp from Aqaba as we took the Nuweiba-Aqaba ferry from Egypt. We were also within our one month Jordanian visa time limit, so there shouldn't have been any suspicion there either.

We've only been to 7 countries on our trip so far and about half have put stickers on our passports related to baggage and security. A lot were in SE Asia.

Yeah, you're right, that's why we only visited Israel for 10 days in order to get to the Syrian border before our one month Jordanian visa expired. That way there's no "lost time".
