I am thinking seriously about hiring and self driving a car around Syria. I would pick the car up at the airport. I am a bit concerned about driving in Damascus and Aleppo. However I plan to drive in these towns as little as possible. I would just want to get to the hotet in Aleppo and just drop the car off in Damascus. Does anyone have any thoughts on this. Thank you.

This has been covered in quite some detail in recent posts: Check out these and these threads for starters; there's plenty more if you do a forum search.

In ten words: Driving in Syria = No problem apart from Damascus and Aleppo.

I do not advise people to rent a car with driver. you will be encoountered with some crazy driving and some surprises on the road like a truck coming from village road to be in just in the middle of the road in front of you.add to that there are no enough road signs
I advise to rent car with driver

I wansn't going to bother on this post seeing as I hve written so much about this in the past, but seeing as someone said 'I advise to rent car with driver' I felt I needed to offer a different opinion.

Sure having a driver makes life easy. I once sat in the back of a Lebanon Taxi (that's the company name) and went from Damascus to Achrafieh (in Beirut) in 2 hours and 15 minutes and I didn't have to do a thing.

BUT, driving in Sryria and Lebanon is perfectly possible if you are a not a timid driver. You just need to be more alert, and a little more agressive, and don't drive out on the freeways or country roads at night.

I spent three years driving all over the region and not only am I still alive, I was never involved in anything other than one or two minor scapes (and one of those was totally my fault for trying to drive too much like a local!).

It is a little strange that the local (posting above) says don't drive and expat says you can if you want to... but there you go.

Aussie: My responses to previous threads were an awful lot more nuanced/detailed than 'It's OK to drive', but I feel like I've written a million posts on this already, and I couldn't be bothered writing in any more than that ;-)

Seems like this question now gets asked even more than the Israeli stamp question!

So were mine.
And I was not even refering to your post at all. I decided to write a quick response only because #3 advised against driving and I felt a different opinio was warranted in case the OP did bother to read the other threads.
