Hi,
I will be taking a bus to Syria from Istanbul, probably to Aleppo then onto Damascus and the usual itinerary. Can anyone recommend recently visited cheap but nice hotels or hostels with private rooms?
I travel on the cheap, am flexible and adventurous, but not at all into the college-age party scene.

Recommendations from #1 are good. Tourist hotel in Aleppo seems to get booked out early so we stayed at Hotel Somar which was also OK.
I don't think you will find any "college-age party scene" in Syria. All the other backpackers we met were genuinly interested in the country rather than just interested in partying and on the whole most people we met were a bit older than the very young backpackers you come across in some countries. Maybe avoid hotels used by tour groups?
