I am searching for good map of the Dead Cities area in Northern Syria. Unfortunately not even the different road maps I have show the exact location of the various ruins. Is there any website or guide book which might help me? We are cycling so we can not rely on taxi or coach drivers.

Thanks in advance
Frank

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Monuments-Syria-Guide-Ross-Burns/dp/1845119479/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237366442&sr=8-1

Old editions are fine; new edition due out April 2009.

You can also try the tourist office in Aleppo! In 2003 they did hand out some maps that were not completely wrong, only a little bit! Don't worry as the dead cities aren't in some uninhabited desert, there are several villages around so you can always ask poeple on the road and in the villages about directions.

as salam,

You can try to write to this guy (dan@syriaphotoguide.com). He post in summer last year a lot of good information on the Thorn Tree.

I travel there last automn with the the 'Syria&Lebanon' by 'Reise Know How' a excellent German map.
Beautiful area with lots of stones to discover.

Ask more if you need.

Have a beautiful travel.

Does anyone know of a bookstore within Syria where one could purchase a copy of The Monuments of Syria? Or maybe get some decent maps?

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Ross Burns' newest book, Damascus: A History, also looks interesting.

Would it be available at the same bookstores?

Thanks!
I found on your previous postings a link to www.syriantours.net which provides very good online maps - hope they are accurate.
