Hi guys,

A couple of weeks back someone was asking about the possibility of a visa on arrival coming overland into Syria for an Aussie/Kiwi duo. We came in from Jordan just a few days ago and had no problems obtaining one. We weren't even asked if we'd been to Israel (we hadn't anyway) but they did thumb through our passports quite extensively. It took about 20mins all up - we were in a service taxi from Amman so the whole trip from Amman to Damascus only took about 3-4 hours. The cost was:

US$30 for an Aussie for either a transit (4 day) or 15 day (but you can stay for 30) visa
US$60 for a Kiwi for a 15 day visa or FREE for a transit visa.

Don't be thinking you can pay in US$ though, you have no choice but to take the required US$ (in our case US$90) to the bank next door and exchange it for Syrian pounds (at a terrible rate) to pay for your visas. Then you have to present the exchange receipt to the immigration dude so there's no getting around it by obtaining Syrian Pounds elsewhere in advance at a better rate.

It was all very simple and straight forward though. Hope this helps.

Can anyone confirm whether the hated British passport receives similar favourable treatment?

Can you tell me which border crossing you used?

I have read there are two.

Was it Ramtha/Dera or Jabir/Nasib?

Thanks

I can't recall the name now - the one that the cars use, not the buses. There's an enormous billboard posted in the Immigration building which clearly states the cost of these visas for every nationality on earth just about, I don't recall noting any omissions (UK, US etc were all there). The locals all recommend that if you want the visa on arrival to use the crossing that we did (go in a service taxi as opposed to a bus, it will be much quicker and easier).
