The hostels in Damascus are not very hostel like;
The Arabie Hotel in Souk Sarouja is quiet and clean, its a lovely old Arabic house with a courtyard and fountain, some of the rooms also have bathrooms but even the shared ones are very clean.
The prices in Syria dont always reflect quality, many of the mid range hotels are grotty and overpriced, some of the budget options offer much better service
Syria also attracts quite a mixed bag of visitors, the younger ones are often the quiet studious type who more often than not prefer an early night with a guide book, its those of us who think life starts at a certain age that tend to stay up late disturbing the peace.
Stay at the Arabe in Damascus, charm thatis hard to beat at the price.
The Damascus Hostel is a great location with terrific staff.
The New Afqa in Palmyra where if you can catch Mahran he can tell you more about the desert than anyone else in Syria.
The Riad in Hama, without doubt has set a bench mark for service and value.
The Daniel in Tartous, well just because its amusing.
The Ziad in deir ez Zour just because the cheapies have very scary toilets
And of course the Barons in Aleppo, yes it is over priced and the worst staff ever to be employed in a Syrian hotel but somehow you cant resist the history, you could of course stay at the Spring Flower around the corner and just pop into the bar of the Barons but you only live once.
You will enjoy Syria
