I recently stayed several nights at Ghazal Hotel on Sharia Souq Saroujah in Damascus. Nice little place, owned by 3 brothers who are very friendly and funny as well, very good location, near Ummayad Mosque and the big souq. Ask for room no. 8 when one person, or 9 when two people. They are located on upper floor with outside terrace where one can observe passers-by. All other rooms are downstairs. The rooms are small, no view, and the shower/toilet cubicle somewhat difficult to maneuver in. But they are clean and one can meet some very interesting travelers while staying there. Nearby are sandwich shops, restaurants, places to smoke seesha. The owners stored my luggage as I travelled throughout Syria via bus, train and so on with smaller luggage. I went to Jordan via bus, and ultimately returned to Ghazal for a few more days.
Damascus is a bit overwhelming at first, but give it a couple of days and it will create warm and lasting memories. So will the rest of Syria. I am a woman of 56 with American passport, who felt safe and respected at all times. Syrian people are super friendly and the country has lots to offer at an affordable price. I stayed occasionally at some expensive hotels in other places in the country, as well as in Jordan, but the warmth of Ghazal environment was seldom found elsewhere.

How much did you pay for a room for 2 people at the Ghazal Hotel?
We have been quoted 1700 SYP. Does that sound about right?
