Tombali- I didn't stay in the Hotel al-Haramain, having said that the receptionist was very helpful when I did go in for some thing else. Both hotels are in a very central location etc. If you think you want to stay at Hotel Ghazal? If you don't want a dorm or the roof. Ask for room number 8 for a single ensuite, or room number 9 is a double ensuite. (These rooms are upstairs and quieter, away from the communal courtyard). You also get a breakfast included. It aint the Ritz, but the brothers who own the Ghazal are freindly and helpfull. Once you travel and leave Damascus, 1,000 to 1,700 SYP gets you some really quality accommodation in Syria.

Question 2, probably not, when you factor in borders, customs delays, and shuttle 2 hours into Baalbeck etc.
You can however get a free 48 hours treansit visaf or Lebanon on arrival. But then you need a multi entry visa for Syria to get back.
