I need to get from Damascus to Cairo between 10.09.09 and 13.09.09. I was thinking of taking the bus from Damascus to Amman, staying the night there, then on the 11th going from Amman to Aqaba, staying the night and taking the ferry on the 12th to Eqypt and then by bus to Cairo. As far as I found out, the (fast) ferry leave Aqaba around 11 am and arrives at Nuweiba in the early afternoon. How are the connections between Nuweiba and Cairo by bus, how much does it cost and how long does it take? Does one get the Egyptian visa on the ferry?

Thanks in advance,

Len

My experience with the ferry from Aqaba to Nuweiba is that the 'regular' ferry arrived before the 'fast' ferry, even though we were charged more for the 'fast' ferry. There was a lot of waiting around and delays, with locals telling us this is not an unusual occurrence.

Other travellers I met on the ferry were able to catch a bus upon arriving in Egypt that took them to Cairo, even though our ferry was very late. I took a bus several days later and it was ~11 hour trip. We obtained our visa for Egypt when we landed and they would only take US dollars (they refused to take Egyptian pounds).

It is possible to organize all the transport yourself and make all the connections provided you are flexible. However, #1 indicates a ticket can be bought with all the connections organized for you, and this may be less stressful.
