Hello,
could anybody tell me the maximum amount in Syrian Pounds which I can take out from ATMs in Damascus using a foreign card?

And which bank is best for foreign cards?

Many thanks.

My experience is 10,000 Syrian pounds, but you can withdraw more than once

So far the best one I've come across is the Real Estate Bank (though it's a bit hard to keep track of which bank was which withdrawal, particularly as I'm not American so the exchange rate varies), though there's not much difference between each

From memory, Real Estate Bank only takes Visa cards - whatever the case, I don't think their ATMs ever work with my Maestro/Mastercards. I always find Banque Bemo Saudi Fransi ATMs to be pretty reliable - there's one just outside Bab Touma which almost always works.

Yes I just used Bank Saudi today (Aleppo) and got 10,000 and then a further 5,000. No idea whether I could have had more...

All banks are the same, and all give exactly the same exchange rate. They are all pretty reliable. The max you can withdraw in one day is 15,000SYP unless your home bank sets a lower limit.

Take some Euros in cash as a backup - the ATMs can stop working (simultaneously - if the central bank plays with the software) for a few hours.

Yeah lio119 is right, I was just experiencing a change-of-exchange-rate each day.

Some ATMs ran out of money at the start of the month, when all the workers withdraw their cash. You'll be able to find one with cash though...
