We are Arsenal fans who are going to be in Syria during the Champions League quarter finals and semi finals, and we are wondering how easy it will be to find places to see the games. Do these games get shown in Syria? We are likely to be staying in mid-range or budget places; is it only more expensive hotels that would have satellite TV?

It looks from my internet searches as if the Syrian league will be playing when we are there (April). Any recommendations for teams to watch and how to get tickets? Can you buy them at the stadium? Would I feel comfortable going to games with my husband?

Thanks as always for your help!

I have read of female tourists visiting soccer matches in Syria before (and horse racing in Beirut). But as Marco said, they're extremely male events. However, foreign females in Syria are usually treated as honorary males - I don't think you'd be made to feel uncomfortable, especially if you were with your husband. You'd probably just be treated as a curiosity, if anything. You might want to double-check with another female tourist who has been to a match, just to be on the safe side, though.

Some of the matches however can get rough. So becareful. I hate it when the matches let out near my house because all chaos breaks loose with team fans either partying in celebration or boo hooing because team lost, then the traffic both pedestrian and car just gets terribly annoying. I had the unpleasantries of following a match parade from hama to damascus one time and I could swear they all had to much to drink. Anyways they are very male, and I certainly wouldnt recomend them. Stadiums are equally uncomfortable. Nothing like back in the states. My nephew even came home from one once having been exposed to tear gas or something of the sort, and countless other times with injuries.

Definatelly if your going excercise caution.
