Hi all,
I am arriving to aleppo on 26th of march around 2AM at the airport and need your help.
Is it safe for a woman to take a taxi to hotel? and how much does it cost?
i've made a reservation at baron hotel for 3 days, in the case if i change my mind, is it possible to reduce to one or two days?
I am female and travel alone from 26 march to 9th avril in syria, if one of you (female ) travel in this period, it could be nice to travel together.
Thanks for your help.

It's perfectly safe for women to travel in Syria as long as you are properly dressed in Muslim areas (at least a t-shirt and a long skirt or trousers). You'll have access to areas forbidden to men if you are invited by families... I used to call this "the mystery of veiled women".

In taxis, use the rear seats, not the seats next to the driver and don't talk to the driver unless you want to give him directions.

I can't remember the prices (I went to Syria three times between 1997 and 2003) but the airport is not that far from the city centre. Normally, from the airport, fares are fixed. If not, ask the driver to use the meter. If he doesn't want to use the meter, get out and take another taxi. A short taxi ride in Aleppo city should not exceed 40 pounds (a good friend updated me recently about the prices) and always use the meter.

When travelling by bus or train, it's always better to sit next to another woman or a child. Sometimes, if you can't find an available seat next to a woman, passengers will change their seats for you, but you can also require the driver to be sit next to a woman and he'll accommodate you.

The Hotel Baron is very popular in Aleppo. So, I think you'll like it. If you want to leave earlier, advise the reception at least 24 hours before. I don't think you'll have to pay extra charges.

Enjoy Syria!
