Hello,
I am planning a trip to UAE and Oman for 11 days around Thanksgiving (late November in the US). I will be flying in and out of DXB (Dubai) as it is cheaper. My main area of interest is really in Oman, so I think I'll spend most of the time in Oman other than one day in Dubai and driving to get to the borders.
I have some questions re. transportation logistics. Has anyone rented a car (4x4) at the DXB airport and took it over to Musandam and the main Oman part without any issues? I read that I need to make sure to have the Omani insurance, but is this something difficult to get? or can I just figure that out at the airport? Also do I need to have the international drivers license or is my US drivers license fine? I have read conflicting advice on that. I'd appreciate it if someone who has already done this type of trip (fly into UAE, then rented a car and took it over to Oman) could share your experience. Also if you think it is just easier to just get to Oman using the bus and rent a car once in Muscat, please let me know.
My other question is regarding visiting Al Wusta and Dhofar. Salalah seems beautiful during the monsoon season, but if I go there in November, would I see any scenery that is vastly different from the Northern parts of Oman? or would it look similar to the Northern parts? Lastly, has anyone driven through Al Wusta and recommend doing so? or is it smarter to fly to Salalah if I decide to visit the southern part of Oman?
I have a lot of time to plan my trip, so I'd appreciate your opinion.
