Hi,

My young daughter and I (British Nationals) are heading to the Musandam part of Oman overland from the UAE for a couple of days bobbing about on a dhow. We will only be in the Middle East for a total of 6 days on a stopover on our way to India.
We have been told numerous conflicting things regarding the visa situation, and no longer know what to believe:
Is it true that.......
1. A visa is not required for the Dibba/Musandam region of Oman for UK/EU nationals.
2. If you land in UAE and enter Oman overland through any border post within 15 days, a visa is not required.
3. If a visa is required, it is cheaper to apply for one, by post, prior to travel at the Oman Embassy (£12 as opposed to £33).

It seems that no matter how much reseach I do, I can get no clear answers. I have e-mailed the Omani Embassy and have contacted a few travel companies and they are all telling me different things. Help!!!!

Many thanks and kindest regards,

Unfortunately not. You need to buy a visa.

No. That only applies if you enter the UAE at Dubai airport and then go directly from the emirate of Dubai to Oman. The only way to do that is to either fly or cross at Hatta. When going to Musandam you'll cross from Ras-al-Khaimah, so the joint visa scheme doesn't apply.

Ask for up-to-date visa fee info at the embassy. I suspect that they may have raised them by now. But some embassies are still cheaper than at the border where the price is 20 OR (~£32)

Wow, thank you! It's great to finally have some definitive information. If I cannot get the visa cheaper in advance (it's advertised on the Oman Embassy website at the current time as £12 single entry), I'm not going to be visiting Oman. £66 for my daughter and I, on a tight budget, is not worth the money for just two days. Bit of a shame, but £66 will go a lot further in India.
Once again, cheers for the info!

Thanks george5 for extremely useful information. I would appreciate further clarification on our situation please. We will be flying to Muscat in November via Dubai and will be on the ground in Dubai airport for about 2 hours. Will we be able to obtain a visa for Oman in the airport and thus avoid the 20 Or fee at the airport in Muscat?

I've never tried with a same day entry/exit myself, so I can't say for certain, but it should work. You need to get stamped in and out of Dubai though, but with 2 hours you should be able to manage that. They may want to sell you a visa at first, if they do insist that you have a Dubai stamp and don't have to pay.

Thanks george5. I'll give it a go and report back - eventually.

I called the Omani embassy in Washington DC and was told that the free visa thing if you fly into Dubai isn't accurate. has anyone done it?

I did it once, so it does exist.
Unless of course they have recently abolished it again, but I haven't heard of that.

Nationals set out in List A arriving from the Emirate of Dubai or from Qatar to Oman bearing a tourist entrance visa or a stamp from either country are not required to obtain a separate visa for Oman provided they travel directly from Dubai or from Doha to Oman.

I don't understand the logic of why they do that. And are we talking about flying into Dubai and coming overland to Oman? What if your flight gets in late? Too bad?

#8 Oman has signed a joint visa agreement with Qatar and the emirate of Dubai where both accept the other country's/emirate's visa an valid for their country as well. Common visa scheme exist in several areas around the world, and are usually a matter of regional politics.
I don't quite understand the second part of your question...
