hello everybody,

my friend and me want to travel through oman for three weeks this november. does anybody know if you really need a cross-country-vehicle or is a normal car good as well?

and: do you know if we can cross the border to return the car in dubai (rental in muscat)? we just got different and confusing answers from the rental-stations.

we are looking forward for tips and information :-)

thanks anita

Hi,

I have not been yet, but by all accounts you can hire a regular sedan for most stuff. If you are doing something like staying at desert camps they usually have a shuttle service meetup, like 10-20 rials or so. I'm going in November as well and planning on hiring a sedan, it's less than half as expensive!! But again it really depends what you want to do. If you want to dune bash, you need a 4x4, though again it's possible to hop on a dune bash at a camp, etc. Probably better to do that since those guys know what they're doing! I think I'm scared to try though...

I'm not sure what regulations are for returning it in a different country, however.
