Hi everyone,

I am currently living in Qatar and I'm planning a short (roughly 1 week) trip to Oman. My girlfriend and I will at one point be driving from Muscat to Ras Al Jinz. We were thinking of camping somewhere on the way along the coast probably only for one night so we can make the most of the journey down the coast.
Annoyingly I do not have a tent with me but as we will be hiring a 4WD I thought that sleeping in the back of the car with all the windows covered would be a good compromise. Can anyone see a problem with this plan? Is there any chance of getting into trouble for a couple being in the back of a car together as opposed to in a tent?
It will be August and so the temperature is also a concern of mine but I thought I better check there would be no other issues I hadn't thought of.

Any and all thoughts welcome. Cheers everyone.

I love camping on the beach in the UAE but I would not do it in August, it's just far too hot. The latest in the year I've camped on the beach was in early May and it was too hot to even put up the tent, we just slept under the stars and it was still uncomfortable.

I can't imagine how you will get any sleep either in the car or in a tent. If you must go in August then I'd strongly recommend staying the night somewhere with air-con.

If you insist on camping then why not just buy a cheap tent? Do you have Carrefour in Doha? if not you can probably pick one up when you get to Muscat (I can confirm that with friends in Muscat if you want? and if nobody else on here can confirm).

I agree buying a tent in Carrefour is easy, about 10 Omani riyals. However, in general sleeping in the car is perfectly ok, I did myself several times.

Exit the highway at Finz, find the way down to the coast. From Finz, take the dirt road going north. You will find perfect camping spots. You can camp anywhere.

To fight the heat, maybe you want to go up on the mountain. Follow the explorer guide book to majlis al jinn cave, you can find possible camp spots up there, too.

Basically you can camp anywhere, just make sure you start looking for the spot around 5pm, so you find it before sunset.

I agree with Kali737 that I think it's going to be too hot to camp on the beach, at Fins or anywhere before Ras Al Hadd, however lovely it is there. However if you drive all the way to Ras Al Hadd (about 2.5-3hrs from Muscat) it is actually much, much cooler there because it's on headland and it catches the winds. I camped there at the beginning of July and it was actually slightly chilly at night - we used blankets!

If you're interested in staying at Ras Al Hadd, and want to stay at a beach hut owned by a local Omani guy, email beachhouseoman@gmail.com and ask for info - he also has a couple of tents he lends if you really want to camp (or you can just sleep on the beach) and use the bathroom/shower etc in the beach hut (if you also rent the beach house).

By the way, there were loads and loads of turtles right on the beach by the beach hut! Really lovely experience,
