Hi, I am travelling to Oman this Thursday with a friend. We fly into Muscat in the afternoon and leave on Monday evening. We plan to stay in Muscat for the first night and hire a car. I really want to go to the south, to Salalah, as I have visited the north before. Would it be feasible to drive there and back, stopping on route at places of interest? I am interested in nature and hiking. Would be interested to hear any opinions and ideas of itinerary. Thanks :)

Hi,

Do you mean you will drive only one way or there and back? If it is one way then it is possible but still seems too far unless you plan only on just driving. But there and back would definitely be too far and it would only be driving constantly.
When you say you have been to the north do you mean Musandam or north of Muscat or everything north of the desert?
If you like hiking and nature and haven’t been I would say definitely go to Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar as there is plenty of walking/camping. Also you can go from there through the Wahiba sand and to Sur you can see the turtles in Ras Al Jinz which is a great experience.
Between Sur and Muscat there is Dibab sinkhole and Wadi Shab which is a great hike and swim.
The above is a circle but might be tight for 3 or 4 days. If I were you then i would start with the road to Sur and once you have done that and the turtles then make up your mind whether you have time or not to do the others?

I wrote more info on my experience in the mentioned places in Oman on my website

Thank you for the advice, we had an amazing trip! Ended up following the route you suggested but the other way. We travelled from Muscat to Nizwa and the mountains staying in Nizwa for the night, then Sur staying in Rass Al Hadd for the night and seeing the turtles, and finally back to Muscat visiting the Wadis and sink hole on the way, with the final day exploring Muscat and around. Planning a trip to Salalah at the end of the year when can fly direct from Qatar.
