HI guys,

I'll be in Oman for 3 days this July. I'm intending to spend 2 days in Muscat and I'd like to hire a car for 1 day and take a daytrip outside of Muscat. I'd like your help and expertise about a feasible option for that trip. I've read a bit about possible options but I have a hard time making a decision.

  • I'd love to see a Wadi, such as the Wadi Shab or the Wadi Tiwi. Is that possible in a daytrip from Muscat?
  • Is it possible to make a daytrip to Jebel Shams?
  • the last option is a trip to Nakhal fort. Is that possible to combine with a trip to a Wadi?

Thanks for the help!

Hello Josni,

I just came back from Oman, you can see my trip report in the forum.

To answer your questions, yes, you can visit Wadi Shab (wadi tiwi and the sinkhole are both within 10 minutes from Wadi Shab) on a day trip and same for Jebel shams, both are totally Worth it.
As for the fort, I don't know about it.

Enjoy your time in Oman

Just to make sure, you can not do Jebel Sham and Wadi Shab on the same day, they are opposite direction from Muscat.

Personnally, I would take 1 day for Muscat, one for the Wadis and one for Jebel Sham, but this is me...not you.

Sounds good, thanks for the reply! 2 days outside Muscat seems a good plan. One last question, do these 2 trips require a 4WD of will a regular car be sufficient? thanks again.

josnl,

1) When you mentioned Jabal Shams did you mean the region or the mountain?
2) You can easily visit Nakhal fort - it is only 120km from Muscan on a very good road. You can also combine this with trip to a wadi - for example Wadi Abyad is close by and really beautiful (some pools to bathe in)
3) Going one day to Jabal Shams and the next to Wadi Shab/Tiwi is rather impossible. It is around 300km between these two places. So if you spend one day around Jaball Shams, you will have to spend half of the next day in car.
4) Trip to the region of Jabal Shams is possible with saloon car (road is paved and very good). The same applies to the trip to Wadi Shab. There is the very good highway along the coast from Muscat to Sur that passes by Wadi Shab. Of course trip to the wadi itself is by foot.

Hello Marcin PL,

1) The rim of Jebel Sham, so the mountain.

As for the impossible for Jebel Sham and Wadi Shab in 2 days, I disagree totally. You can leave from Muscat on the early morning and climb Jebel Sham, and see Nizwa fort on the way. Is it a long drive, but it's such a nice and weird scenery, that just the road itself makes it a nice trip. Then, after climbing Jebel Sham, you head back toward Muscat to continue as close as possible to Wadi Shab and spent the night either in Muscat or in between Muscat and Wadi Shab. Then you do a daytrip near the wadis.

Again, it's my opinion, I do believe it's totally doable.

It's up to you to decide.

Good luck with your trip.

Alexandre,

If you mean mountain called Jabal Shams, so it is really long trekking (full day - about 10-12hours). A suppose you write about the canion. It is possible to drive from Al Hamra to a small village called Al Khitaym at the end of a paved road. From the village one can walk to the rim of the canion or make longer trek/walk along the wall of the canion to the abandoned hamlet As Sab (it is marked route No W6). It is also possible to walk down from Al Khitaym to the village Ghul (at the mouth of the canion), but it is longer trek (and more challenging in summer sun). It is also marked - No W6a.
So if someone wants to drive from Muscat to Al Khitaym and just see the canion, then drive back to Muscat, and further to Fins it is POSSIBLE but very tedious. Doing this one will spend most of time in a car. I suggest to reduce amount of time spent on driving and choose one region. Both of the regions mentioned before are in fact packed with attractions and worth spending two days.
