Hi All,

My wife and I will be in lebanon in June 2011 for 1 week as part of a 6 month trip around asia. I would really appreciate it if somebody could give me an idea of a realistic budget for a trip along the following lines, the information we're receiving varies greatly.

1) Basic (but not dorms) shared accommodation for 2, no problems with comunal showers and toilets.

2) Eat breakfast & lunch on the street and maybe a basic sit down meal in evening - in a cheap but hygienic restaurant.

3) Maybe 6 beers a week between the 2 of us. No other nightlife especially needed.

4) Travelling by bus/Train and where possible at night to save accommodation costs and time!

5) probably going to a sight every other day and we want to see everything that's attractive without being restrictive because of costs.

Many thanks to all in advance!!

For a start, Lebanon is NOT CHEAP. My family and I just got back from a 5 nights visit and I wished I had taken my family to the US instead where prices are relatively sane when compared to Lebanon.

For accommodation, DO NOT STAY at the Embassy Hotel. You can get better value from the Marble Tower Hotel. For meals, we always eat at BARBAR and consider the price okay given the fact that the other places are much more expensive.

If possible, avoid Lebanon and just focus on Syria.

I don't fully agree with Mr Right Now...

Lebanon, and particularly Beirut, can be very expensive, especially if high-end clubbing, posh restaurants, private beach clubs and designer clothing are your bag, but you can also travel on a bugdet too. If you want to blow your budget, it's certainly easier to do so in Lebanon than practically any other Arabic country except the UAE. However, there's enough cheap accomodation around, plenty of great street food, and as long as you get services instead of private taxis, it is possible to get by in Lebanon on a similar budget to Jordan.

Check out Saifi Urban Gardens for cheap accomodation in Beirut and Dhiafee Programme for cheap accomodation elsewhere around the country.

I definitely wouldn't drop it - Lebanon is a great place. Le Chef and Tawlet - two of the best restaurants in Beirut - are actually two of the cheapest, also.

Whether you agree with me or not is a separate issue. The FACT remain that COSTS are LOWER in Syria rather than Lebanon. Is delivering that message something that balks you?

Um... no.

Not quite sure where you got that from, as I'd also agree that Syria is cheaper than Lebanon. Simply making the point that, IMHO, it'd be silly to make a decision not to visit Lebanon solely based on cost grounds, when it can actually be visited quite cheaply.
