Hello everyone

After years of just talking about it my friend and I are very excited to be finally travelling from Scotland to Beirut at the end of October. I would really appreciate some advice re what kind of weather to expect, i..e do we need to bring a jacket and is it expected to be rainy?

Also, we are staying at the Riviera Hotel which I chose somewhat randomly from a travel website - can anyone give me any info re this hotel and whether it is in a central location for shops/sightseeing etc? How far is it from the ABC Shopping Mall? We mainly want to relax and wander about getting to know Beirut a bit during the week we are there, however we do also wish to visit the Jeita Grotto and spend some time in the countryside/mountains if possible as we have heard it is very beautiful - can anyone please recommend the name of a safe and reliable firm where we could hire a driver/guide and also give me some idea of the approximate cost of this (in US $)?

Finally, are there any must-see's/do's you would recommend for our brief visit?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

hi, im planning to go to beirut at the end of this month. we are splitting our trip between lebanon and syria. theres too much to do, but we only have a week, so we're picking and choosing things. in lebanon we are seeing beirut, byblos (jbeil), jounieh/harissa, jeita grotto and baalbek. in syria we are planning damascus and palmyra.
from what i've read the weather seems okish.

hope you have fun!

The weather will still be warm. It could rain (and if it does, it usually rains very heavily and the roads become rivers) but often there is a "second summer" at the end of October or early November.
The Riviera is in a nice position near the sea and you can walk around Hamra from there. There is plenty of shopping in Hamra. Being near a main road (the Corniche) is also handy for getting taxis or service-taxis to the rest of town. For shopping malls you will find it closer to go to the Beirut Souks mall in the downtown than ABC mall in Ashrafieh. Plus there is more atmosphere as you are still in the town centre near Hamra.
