Hi, what's the best way to get to the Dead Sea and back? For a day trip/maybe one night? Thanks!

If 'best' means easiest/most comfortable...either private taxi or organised day trip (most of the hotels in Amman can organise it for you).

For a more economical way to reach the Dead Sea, try and take a shared day tour with a driver, from one of Amman’s backpackers. That tour will take in Bethany beyond the Jordan, the Dead Sea, Madaba and then back to Amman. For bathing in the Dead Sea, use Amman Beach. For your entrance fee you get the use of a beach, an outdoor pool, beach side showers toilets and changing facilities. There is also a cafe and some tourist tat shop selling local* tchotchkes*. The Jordanian Dead Sea’s hotel rooms for overnight accommodation IMO are all highly priced.

Next time you are in Israel, for the Dead Sea take a public bus from Jerusalem to the Ein Gedi bus stop walk along 100 metres to the free public beach. Facilities available are showers, lockers and cafes etc. And sleep overnight at the youth hostel either in a dorm or a private room. http://www.iyha.org.il/Eng/eingedi

You have public transport from Amman but it's not a direct one.

YOu have quite good answers above posts.
You can share day trips with some hotels in especially downtown Amman.
Some hotels arrange for day trips for their guests.Shared tour cost each 10 jod to visit Dead sea and return to Amman.this is assuming you have 4 people on the tour.
Amman Beach is best to visit.

cheers

Thanks for that Michel, so tell the OP:
1/ which bus station to go to.
2/ what bus number to catch.
3/ how much the fare is.
4/ how many kilometres Amman Beach actually is, from the village where the bus will drop her off.
5/ how much the taxi will cost from the village to Amman Beach.

6/ and then finally how to get back to Amman in the fierce heat from the Dead Sea.
