Recommended check-in time for all flights is 2 hours before departure, but if the airport is not busy (it rarely is) you can risk cutting it to 90 or even 75 minutes.

Before today's fuel cost increase a taxi from Amman to the airport cost JD 10 for locals. A few days ago I was even offered a ride from the 7th Circle to the airport for JD 5, but I suspect the driver (though keen for a job) would have tried to renegotiate for a generous "tip" en route. Foreigners are asked JD 20, but drivers will quickly settle on JD 15. This is still too much, so bargain down to 12 or 13. (The metered fare would be JD 7 or 8.) Be prepared to tell several drivers to go to hell, then try the next car. At busy times you often have 5 or 10 taxis available within 50 metres around you, so you do have some bargaining power.

If any driver uses the new fuel costs to justify a price increase by 50 or 100% he is ripping you off. 10% to 20% more would be be reasonable. The government has authorized a price increase of 10% for "official" taxi fares FROM the airport, but these are already inflated (JD 17.500), so they can absorb the higher fuel costs more easily.

Thanks to you all it sounds like we will be able to get to airport without breaking the bank. I thank you.

I can't believe that I have to bother you again but believe it or not I have another question. We will be traveling on Friday. Does this make a difference as to the number of servees and the times that they travel from Petra to Amman. I figure taxis will go anyway regardless of the day. Thanks again,
Carol

We're talking minibuses here, Carol, not service taxis. There are very few of them anyway from Petra to Amman. People go to Amman when they have business in Amman and if everything is closed they have no reason to go there!

Sorry, but you are in trouble here!

Thanks Ruth, I did get the terms minibuses and servees mixed up. So do minibuses go on Friday to Amman? I know that Sabat starts at 2:00 on Friday, but if we leave at 6 a.m. we should be in Amman way before that or are there just no services on Friday at all.
Thanks again,
Carol

Carol, you've got your countries mixed up as well as the rules! Just consider that Friday is like a Western Sunday in Arab countries!! I have NO idea where 2:00 comes into anything.

There is unlikely to be any public transport at all from Petra to Amman on a Friday. There may be a few scattered buses, but absolutely no guarantees about 6am. You can ask your hotel to check this.

I am sorry, but I have no real suggestion to make.

Thanks Ruth for all your help. I'll figure out something...that's part of the adventure of travel.
