Yeh - when I was in Petra in October last year I personally saw several massive lumps of lard riding not only donkeys but also camels and horses. You feel really sorry for the animals .....

I was in Petra last week and was quite shocked at how lazy some people are. I am not very fit but I didn't find the climb to the monestry that hard. In the afternoon the route is in shade and anyone can stop for a rest if tired.
I was concerned for the animals there as it was so hot and they were carrying some large lumps and sometimes two people. People are so lazy these days. If they used their legs they might shift some lard.
I did actually see some ladies arrive at Petra wearing heals and so therefore felt the need to ride a donkey around the site.
When I was in Petra I saw two cases of animal cruelty there with the donkeys. Fellow tourists, please report mistreatment of donkeys to the Petra Archaelogical Park and Heritage Society. They want to hear from tourists visiting Petra about any signs of crutely toward the donkeys working there (neglect, excessive whipping, hitting, punching, leaving in the sun for long periods).
