Hi,

I'd like to see Petra by night. I have heard that there are guided night tours. Does anyone know how much these cost and how I would book or go about joining this tour?

Many thanks!

I do not know any night guided tours in Petra. What exists is an event "Petra by night" that many people say is a show and all the guides books recommend and does not really pay off to go. The "Petra by Night" is that: You have to walk up to The Treasure on a path illuminated by candles and getting there will have to sit on that filthy floor that is the toilet of camels and donkeys during the day (they think tourists are garbage and forget we live in countries with high standard of hygiene and cleanliness). Will be served half a glass of tea, watch the presentation of two songs and one Bedouin story and its over. The Bedouin guide is a rude and unpleasant man who is reproaching the people who take photographs.
I went and did not like and listened many people complaining.
Just one more reason to take the tourists money .
Its every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday Night at 8.30pm , Jods 12 per person and you can ask the ticket for your hotel .
If you do not have anything better to do at night and you're not tired to walk that long way go, but will not expect anything wonderful.

I second 99% vaniacroccia. I also found Petra by night very very disappointing, and I laughed when I read
will have to sit on that filthy floor that is the toilet of camels and donkeys during the day, because that's exactly what it is! However, during "my"night there was no rude man reproaching people who took pictures - and also I respectfully disagree with the sentence
they think tourists are garbage and forget we live in countries with high standard of hygiene and cleanliness.
For the rest, I fully agree that you can spend your time and money in Petra in a better way. Vaniacroccia could not have been more exhaustive with her description of Petra by night, and if you decide to go for it in the end, definitely don't expect anything wonderful.
Happy travel!

I don't agree with the above. I did 'Petra by night' the evening I arrived and thought it was nice to walk through the dark. In front of the Treasury I liked lying down on the mats provided and stare at the stars for a bit. I don't think I would have bothered if I had already been during the day (it is a long walk in the current July heat) but this way it was a fun bit of entertainment. Sure it is a totally touristy experience but, hey, we are tourists aren't we?

For what my opinion matters, I liked little 'Petra by Night' not because it was touristy - or because I had already visited the place during the day. I just didn't like it. From what I had heard and read I was expecting something different, so probably it was my fault that I had too many expectations... I had many touristy experiences which I enjoyed immensely, but 'Petra by Night' is not among them - and this is of course just my opinion...
