I'd imagine that lots of people have been to Petra, and many of you have been at new year. Can you tell me what the weather has been like in previous years? In the past has it been blue skies, cloudy, rainy, or snowy?
I imagine some of you are going to come on here and say 'all four are possible' but unless it is likely to be 'snowed under', I'll probably go there on 31st Jan/ 1st December.
Also, if there are any likely price increases in hotels, transport, taxis, I'd like to know about that before I book my flight.
many thanks in advance

In descending order of probability, you might have
Clouds
Rain
Blue skies
Snow
Snow typically occurs a few times per winter season, though more frequently than in the rest of Jordan due to Petra's high altitude. For me, Petra is only woth visiting in clear, sunny conditions. The most likely time of the year to get sun AND clear (not hazy, dusty, misty) skies is autumn. Rain or at least overcast weather are very typical in winter, and in my opinion both make Petra look depressing. However, "perfect" weather is mostly a requirement if you want to take pictures, no so much if you are happy just to look and admire.
