My wife and I are contemplating travelling to Jordan in December/January 2012/13 for about four weeks. Some of our readings suggest that there may not be a great deal to do in Joradan and that one month may be too long. Has anyone got an opinion on this who has had the experience of travelling in this country?
Another option may be to spend two weeks in Egypt and two weeks Jordan or there abouts.
I would appreciate anyone's opinion - thank you in advance.
It totally depends on your interests. If culture is your thing I would combine Jordan with Egypt. If you are in to hiking and nature, stick to Jordan.
I believe it all depends what you are looking for to do in that trip...just sit and relax or to do some sightseeing...
because in a week you can visit Wadi Rum , Al aqaba , Jarash and Petra.... you may get some snow fall also in petra

No one here can tell you how long you should stay in a particular country or how much time is "too long" because only you know your travel preferences, travel objectives, travel style and interests.
You don't give us any of that information. What difference does it make what our experiences are; we're not you.
In a month you can comfortably cover/enjoy Jordan and Israel and Palestine.these countries border each others and rich with diverse cultures and traditions

Well as other OP mentioned it depends on your interests, I mean December/ January is a wet month in Jordan. so Canyons will be closed, hikes can be organised but weather is so fickle you cant really plan anything! Aqaba would be nice, weather is decent however, water is too cold to swim, a dive might be good if interested. Wadi Rum would be freezing as all deserts in the Winter, the joy of it is at night, when they light a bonfire and mingle with other tourists (I might be mistaken but that's purely subjective!).
The dead sea is quite nice that time of the year, went there so many times during winter, temp usually varies but stayes in the 20s. might get a bit chilly
since it is winter and as any other country, activities are usually limited, (As suggested by fellow travellers) why not combine Egypt and other regions, to your travels. Sharm El Sheikh would have nice, mild weather.

To echo previous posters, how much time you spend in one location will depend on what all you want to get out of said location. Jordan is a wonderful country and has a lot of diverse topography and geology. It offers a good range of activities and sites to see.
That said, we recently spent two weeks in Jordan, doing a range of activities across the whole of the country. This included visits to all of the major sites (Petra, Jerash, Wadi Rum, et al), seeing some of the out of the way sites (Umm Qais, desert castles, Umm Ar-Rasas), three days scuba diving, time in Amman and Madaba and days for rest and relaxation on the Dead Sea and in Aqaba. All of that said, at the end of our two weeks we felt as though we had seen most of Jordan.
If we had a month in the region, we would have combined Jordan with Israel and Palestine or combined Jordan with Egypt.
We spent 2 weeks in Jordan and didn't really feel it was enough. One month would be ideal, but as I don't like cold wet weather I wouldn't go to Jordan in January.
If you want better advice tell us what your interests and style of travelling are. Are you into nature, ruins, boutique hotels, climbing? We will be able to advise better.
Egypt will have hot weather in January.
