Have read that there may be only two places where they sell beer. Is this really the case? What are the chance of celebrating the New Year? We do not want to spend all the night out, but it would be nice to stay up until about 1:00 A.M. - if not, purchase alcohol. Is this possible?

Thank you.

Actually there is no shop as such selling alcohol in Petra! Several hotels sell it (illegally) but you really have to ask a local when you are there, since I am not going to post the names on the Internet! Some hotels would get it for you, others are run by strict Moslems and wouldn't want to know!

There is usually a party at the Crowne Plaza.

Thank you for the information. I guess we will go the Crowne Plaza to celebrate. My family will lynch me if they do not get some wine!!!! Is it possible to take it across the border from Eilat?

I spent New Year's Eve in Petra last year and our hotel organised a party where they offered wine. Some people complained it was not good wine, but sure if I only spend 20 euros or so for the dinner and drinks I don't expext to be given champagne! I don't remember whether there was beer.
I believe most or virtually all hotels organise New Year's Eve parties for their customers and I don't feel like recommending my own hotel, as that was the worst accommodation of the whole trip.
However, I agree that, if the priority is to drink wine, maybe one should consider a different destination - no intention to be rude, but the more one accepts local customs, the more rewarding his/her trip will be.
Enjoy!
