Hello again,

So we have booked our flights to Amman and out of Damascus and we've booked our hotel for the first two nights and the last two nights. As we are going in somewhat 'high season' (end September / early October) we did have a bit of trouble finding accommodation in Damascus. So now I'm wondering what to do for the other 7 nights we are there. We will be travelling only throughout Jordan for the remainder, and we were hoping to book hotels and 1/2 days tours (of Petra for example) while we are there, sort of on the fly - but as it is high season, and given the trouble I found w/ Syria, do you think we should book everything now?? I'm worried about being stuck in Amman for 9 nights because we can't find a hotel in Wadi Musa or a tour operator that has any space left, leaving like the next day?? Does anyone have any experience or advice on this...? Thanks.

To visit Jordan you dont need a tour operator, I had been there in last May alone and on my own and had no difficulty. What is the problem? You could not reserve a hotel in Wadi Musa? You have tried in www.booking.com? What kind of hotel do you want?
Tell us your problem specifically maybe some of us can help you.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a specific problem, per se. What I'm wondering is this: During peak season (end of September time) will we need to book all our hotels in advance? We were hoping to just go and book hotels as we turned up, is this a bad idea in terms of finding a place to stay in Jordan? Specifically I guess Petra...?

Vaniacroccia, how did you get to Wadi Musa, did you get a bus or a shared taxi? I understand there is only one bus a day from Amman to Wadi Musa, I suppose it is normally full as well so not sure whether that's the best way to get there??

You are talking about the JETT bus to Petra; there are buses leaving every couple of hours from the Wahedat (south) bus station. Just tell a taxi "mujamma al Janoob" or probably "bus to Petra" would do just as well.

There are something like 60 hotels in Petra, you are unlikely to have any difficulty unless you wait until 6pm or later to find one. The higher end hotels are the most likely to be booked up.

Have a look at www.jordanjubilee.com for information on visiting Jordan for the independent traveller.

I do not know Jordan as well as Ruth, I had been there only once for 17 days but by what I saw and lived there I would not risk going to Wadi Musa without a hotel reservation.
Despite having 60 hotels in Wadi Musa, many hotels are bad and others very expensive, good hotels with good prices are always full so if you get there without a reservations may have to pay dearly or stay in a bad hotel . I think you know how prices are made in the Middle East. Nothing is fixed price.. My experience there was this - everything that I had to improvise or I needed without planning before I paid dearly.

I dont went straight from Amman to Wadi Musa, I stayed a few days in Wadi Mujib and Dana, did the entire itinerary by car with driver arranged by hotels. Do not think that finding someone to share taxis there is easy ... not even to answer you with a smile when you wish them a good morming. Tourists there not like to talk and meet others, completely different from the Jordanians who are friendly, kind and happy.
